Clean water is essential for life, but one in eight people in the world do not have access to safe drinking water. Many women and children living in rural areas of Africa spend hours each day walking great distances to collect water from muddy pools and streams.
Carrying the heavy water containers back home on their heads is an exhausting task. It often stops the children from going to school.
Diarrhoeal diseases caused by drinking unsafe water, such as cholera, typhoid and dysentery, are common across the developing world, killing one child every 20 seconds – that’s 4,000 children every single day.
In Zambia, the High Five Club has partnered with the local community in the wildlife-rich Luangwa Valley to construct wells right in the heart of the rural villages there.
Each well costs just £800 and serves over 200 people for life. The community hand-make the bricks to line the wells and the High Five Club provides the funds for well construction, cement, winding chains and buckets. It’s a joint effort – a hand up, not a hand out.
